The conversations on Instagram algorithms never end as almost everyone on Instagram wants to decode the new Instagram algorithm 2024. But there is no real, old algorithm vs new algorithm cheat sheet for Instagram. All those who succeed on Instagram though, have some idea of what seems to be working, what’s on trend and what’s being pushed in terms of reach.

So here’s what we know about the 2024 Instagram algorithm, in contrast with the old Instagram Algorithm.

What’s Working on Instagram Now: Old Algorithm vs the New Instagram Algorithm 2024

In 2024, with the new Instagram algorithm, what’s working the best is ‘original content’ or at the most, content that is related to a viral idea but contains some custom tweaks to make it your own. This is in sharp contrast with last year, when reposting others’ content pieces worked just as well.

On the other hand, where collabs did not get much traction on the old algorithm they are the real deal now in 2024. So having 1 or 2 collabs every week or every other week is great now.

Up until last year, all Instagram gurus were harping about link in bios in order to sell. In 2024, with the popularity of software like Manychat, it is all about DM automation baby. Getting someone to DM you and DMing other is the surefire method of getting noticed these days, especially if you are looking to reach non-followers without Instagram ad budgets.

Previously Instagram was all about running on the content wheel endlessly, with a base requirement of posting 3 to 5 times a day in order to grow your Instagram account. Sadly that stays, that’s not going anywhere. It has just been reworded to – post a minimum of 5 to 7 times a week!

Previously, hashtags were everything. Loading your posts with 25 to 30 hashtags was a norm to gain better reach. But now, with the changed Instagram algorithm, it is all about keywords, especially keywords in captions. Many Instagram gurus also claim to put keywords in their stories and reels, then minimizing the sizes and then stowing them to the corners where they are not visible, but they are still there for the algorithm.

Last year, Instagram was going crazy on reel promotion, possibly in a bid to compete against TikTok and Snapchat. It has either given up on that, or realized the folly in that strategy now. Because with the new 2024 Instagram algorithm, they are showing no such preference. All formats are in the green and every account is encouraged to make use of all of them.
